What We Believe

The Christians of the Elmwood Church of Christ are committed to knowing Christ and making Christ known. Striving to bring both their personal and their church lives under the control of God, they try to follow Christ faithfully and submit their lives to the control of the Holy Spirit.

To the question, “Just what do you believe?“ we respond, “We believe the Bible.” Of course, almost every church in Lafayette would say the same thing. To be a little more specific:

We believe there is one God, creator of all. This God has been revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How these are three, yet one, is a great mystery.

We believe that the Bible is a unique revelation of God to people. It is the inspired, infallible Word of God. We consider it the supreme and final authority on all matters relating to our relationship with God and other people.

We believe that Jesus Christ was born of Mary, a virgin from Nazareth. He lived a sinless life, willingly took on himself all our sins, died and rose again bodily, and is presently at the right hand of God interceding for those who believe in Him. One day He will return to call the faithful to himself and consummate history.

We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin and draws people to Christ. He indwells all believers, empowering them to lead Christ-like lives. He also gives each believer spiritual gifts with which to serve the church and minister to a lost and needy world.

We believe that all people, left to themselves, are without God and without hope. God, however, grants salvation and eternal life to all those who trust in Jesus Christ. Salvation cannot be earned through human effort, sincere remorse, or personal sacrifice. Rather, it is the free gift of God that must be received through faith, repentance, and baptism into Christ. Forgiveness is a divine work.

We believe that all Christians are members of the body of Christ, the one true church universal. Spiritual unity is to be expressed among Christians by acceptance and love of one another across ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, national, generational, and gender lines.

We believe that the local church is a congregation of believers who gather for worship, prayer, instruction, encouragement, and community with each other. Through it, believers invest time, energy, and resources to reach those outside Christ and walk beside them as together they grow into fully devoted followers of Christ.

We believe that baptized believers are invited by God into a life of discipleship that looks to Jesus Christ as the perfect guide and model. As we grow in Christ we become less attracted to destructive ways that once appealed to us, and more attracted to God’s ways and God’s principles. Worship, Bible reading, prayer, and service to others are increasingly important to us both individually and as a church.
